(ST. PAUL, Minn.) – Despite being a DFL-majority state, the GOP is putting in a good run for the Minnesota Gubernatorial and Senate seats.
Minnesota DFL Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan leads Republican candidate Michele Tafoya by four points in the Senate race with 47 percent of the vote. Unsurprisingly, DFL and GOP voters sided with their respective parties.
However, the poll showed that independents were nearly split, with 37 percent favoring Flanagan and 40 percent choosing Tafoya. Another 24 percent of independents are still undecided.
The poll shows similar results for the Gubernatorial race. Senator Amy Klobuchar (DFL) has previously led her competitors by double digits in polls, but holds only a nine-point lead over Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth (GOP).
Geographically, Klobuchar holds the bulk of votes (64%) in the Twin Cities, while pollsters in northern and southern Minnesota strongly support Demuth. Independent voters are also currently leaning toward Demuth (41%) over Klobuchar (37%).
Klobuchar hasn't campaigned much outside the Twin Cities, which may have isolated some voters and affected her overall popularity. Demuth, however, has been steadily campaigning across Minnesota.
Florida-based Mason-Dixon Polling and Strategy conducted the KARE 11/Star Tribune Minnesota Poll over two days, October 5-7, performing live and telephone interviews. Eight hundred randomly selected participants took part in the poll, all of whom intend to vote in the November election. According to statisticians, the poll's margin of error is 3.5 percentage points.
