(SAN RAMON, Calif.) – The San Ramon Valley Education Foundation will host its 43rd annual Run for Education on Sunday, October 11, bringing runners, walkers, families, students and community members together to support local public schools.

The event will be centered at Iron Horse Middle School in San Ramon, located at 12601 Alcosta Blvd. Most of the events, including the Mini Run, Friendship Run, and the 5K, will start and finish at the school. Additionally, a new untimed 1.5-mile walk/run will be offered this year at the same location and time as the 5K, giving participants the option to complete a shorter course.
The 10K run will begin at Charlotte Wood Middle School in Danville before finishing at Iron Horse Middle School.
The event's theme this year is “Come for the Run, Stay for the Fun,” with activities planned throughout the morning. The Expo for Education and Kids’ Zone will run from 8 a.m. to noon at Iron Horse Middle School, while attendees can also enjoy inflatable games, face painting, exhibitor booths, and appearances from the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District and San Ramon Police Department.
The foundation is also introducing a School & Group Costume Contest. Groups of at least four registered participants can compete in categories including Best School Spirit and Best Community Group. Judges will consider creativity and originality, group coordination, school or community pride, and enthusiasm.
Groups must be present at the Expo Stage at approximately 11 a.m. for judging. Costumes must be family-friendly and cannot interfere with participant safety or the event experience.
The 10K will begin at Charlotte Wood Middle School at 8:15 a.m. The Expo for Education and Kids’ Zone will open at Iron Horse Middle School at 8 a.m. The 5K and 1.5-mile race will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the Friendship Run at 9:45 a.m. The Mini Run, designed for children ages 2 to 6, will begin at 10:15 a.m. with phased heats, while the Recognition Ceremony and drawings are scheduled for 11 a.m., with participants required to be present to win prizes.
The event will also recognize the fastest San Ramon Valley Unified School District staff finishers in the 5K and 10K during the recognition ceremony.
The Run for Education includes several ways for community members to participate. The chip-timed 5K and 10K include a shirt, medal, and finish-line expo. The 1.5-mile event is untimed and also includes a shirt, medal, and access to the finish-line expo.
Children ages 2 to 6 can participate in the Mini Run, which covers approximately 135 to 300 yards depending on age. Young participants will receive a shirt, cape, medal, and post-race treat.
The Friendship Run is designed for athletes with special needs and their supporters. Participants can walk, roll, or run alongside a friend or caregiver. Each participant receives a shirt, cape, medal, and post-race treat, with one friend or caregiver able to register for free.
A virtual option is also available for those who cannot attend on race day. The virtual registration is a 100% donation, although shirts and medals are not included.
According to the San Ramon Valley Education Foundation, proceeds from the Run for Education help fund STEAM grants and innovative programs throughout the San Ramon Valley Unified School District's 35 public schools serving Alamo, Danville, and San Ramon.
The event has been a San Ramon Valley community tradition for more than four decades and is described by the foundation as the largest run supporting education in Northern California. Participants are encouraged to register individually or gather friends, family members, neighbors, teammates, and clubs to participate together.
Groups of 10 or more registered for the 5K, 1.5-mile, or 10K by September 30 can receive additional group perks, including access to a hospitality tent at the Expo and recognition on the foundation's website, newsletter, and at the Expo. The hospitality tent is available to the first eight qualifying community groups.
