(ST PAUL, MN.) -- A Minnesota House Committee voted 8 to 8 on a resolution to begin impeachment proceedings against current Gov. Tim Walz and Attorney General Keith Ellison. The House Committee tie means the resolution was rejected, but not directly.
Regardless of whether the resolution went through or not, the damage is already done, as Walz withdrew from the 2026 Gubernatorial Race amidst scrutiny of how he was handling the widespread fraud happening in State programs. Many Republicans felt the impeachment resolution was necessary, noting a lack of accountability from the Walz Administration regarding how large the fraud issue is. Democrats believe it was a red herring, meant to distract from larger political issues facing the Trump Administration, and by association, the GOP.

For his part, after the vote, Gov. Walz urged lawmakers to continue to focus on economic issues and not current political conflicts. Despite the resolution's rejection and Gov. Walz's insistence on economic focus, Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s bid for Governor of Minnesota may be at risk.
Currently, Sen. Klobuchar is the sole DFL candidate and hasn’t put much effort into campaigning or holding rallies, events that provide a way for undecided voters to learn more about the candidates. This reliance on existing support and popularity for a single DFL candidate has the potential to backfire if the GOP decides to unify, especially considering the political unrest between (and within) the DFL and GOP, and the alleged mishandling and lack of accountability for state program fraud.
