(PLEASANTON, Calif.) – On September 24, the Pleasanton Unified School District (PUSD) Board of Trustees appointed Deputy Superintendent Ed Diolazo to become the next PUSD Superintendent.

This is one of multiple staff appointments made within PUSD this year. New staff in other Pleasanton government bodies have also been appointed recently, such as Pleasanton’s interim city manager.
Effective on January 1, 2027, Diolazo will be taking Superintendent Maurice Ghysels, Ed.D’s position, who is retiring after serving as Superintendent since July 1, 2025. The Board of Trustees came to the decision to appoint Diolazo during the closed session of their meeting.
In his current position as Deputy Superintendent, Diolazo’s work consists of assuming responsibilities within different areas of PUSD such as Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives and the implementation of board policies. The Deputy Superintendent also serves as Superintendent in case of the Superintendent’s absence.

As Superintendent, Diolazo’s responsibilities will take on a broader, more public-facing scope. These entail keeping the public informed on PUSD’s decisions, discussing school improvement with teachers and other employees, and overall keeping up with and improving the conditions and public opinions of PUSD.
Fortunately for Diolazo, the public already seems to regard him in a positive light. During the open session of the meeting California School Employee Association Ryan Kelly stepped up to the podium to express her and represent her colleagues’ enthusiasm at Diolazo’s appointment.
“Classified staff strongly advocate for the appointment of Ed Diolazo as Superintendent for Pleasanton Unified.”
Following this statement, members in the audience of the meeting applauded before Kelly shared a bit of Diolazo’s background and the reasons behind her and her colleagues’ enthusiasm.
“Ed has worked for Pleasanton Unified for nine years. He knows our schools, our employees, our students, families, and our community. Most importantly, he has earned the trust and overwhelming support of our staff.”

Later, when the Board was reviewing the employee agreement required to appoint Diolazo as the next Superintendent, Board President Kelly Baehr also spoke on Diolazo’s good qualities, which was met again with applause from the others attending the meeting.
“Ed Diolazo brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise and understanding of the priorities and needs of our PUSD students, families, district policies, our culture, and our daily operational realities. This appointment will allow for a strong preservation of our institutional processes, reducing disruption at the leadership level and as it pertains to many of our district specialized roles.”
Members of the public also reacted well to Diolazo’s appointment on PUSD’s Facebook post, with many congratulating Diolazo and commenting that he is a great choice and deserved
Upon observing such a large amount of positive public reaction, OpGov reached out to Pleasanton resident Eric Wedeking, inquiring about how such a reaction makes him feel about the appointment.
Though he admitted he only knew a little bit about Diolazo, knowing that so many have strong positive feelings about the appointment made him feel “quite positive” about it as well.
