PLEASANTON, CA — The Pleasanton City Council has voted unanimously to bring Joe Calabrigo out of retirement to serve as interim city manager, tapping one of the Tri-Valley’s most seasoned municipal administrators to steady the city during a leadership transition.
Calabrigo officially assumed the role on Monday after spending more than 40 years serving the Town of Danville, where he held nearly every senior position before leading the organization as town manager for 32 years. He joined Danville in 1984, just a year after the town’s incorporation, and built a reputation as a steady hand through multiple economic cycles.
“Plesanton is a well-respected organization with an outstanding staff and a strong tradition of public service.”
— Joe Calabrigo, Interim City Manager
The appointment fills the vacancy left by outgoing City Manager Gerry Beaudin, who departed Pleasanton to lead the City of Alameda. The council conducted several closed sessions this spring before settling on Calabrigo as its preferred candidate for the interim position.
Calabrigo’s track record managing Danville on a lean budget — the town historically relies on property taxes and assessment districts rather than large commercial revenue sources — is considered an asset as Pleasanton works through its own fiscal challenges while pursuing a permanent hire.
Under the terms of his contract, Calabrigo will be compensated at $25,000 per month with no additional employment benefits. He will remain in the role until a permanent city manager is hired through the nationwide search the council is now undertaking.
Pleasanton is navigating a busy period, with active development and infrastructure projects underway across the city. Residents and community stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the new interim leader engages with those priorities in the months ahead.
