(MINNEAPOLIS, MN) – Minneapolis City Council adopted several progressive resolutions celebrating cultural identities at its regular meeting Jun. 25, the largest of which was the Pride and Policy Package. The resolution established Minneapolis as a safe haven for 2SLGBTQIA+ citizens and continued protection for gender-affirming and intersex care. It also created a path for ongoing bathhouse regulation. Tibetan and Somali cultures also saw ceremonial recognitions, outlining their contributions to the City of Minneapolis.
A division of opinion surrounding a moratorium on data centers in the city created some tension. Supporters and opponents of the moratorium both argued their sides passionately, but in the end, the moratorium passed 7-5. The moratorium will last five-months and the time will be used to gather further information and create specific data center regulations regarding zoning and other important items.
North Minneapolis representatives were in disagreement with the reappointment of the Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) Director Erik Hansen, alleging there was a noticeable lack of equitable development in their district. Public accountability was a key factor in a resolution to audit Minneapolis Public Housing Authority’s (MPHA) use of city funds due to major housing concerns at Heritage Park.

A heated debate over the appointment of the new Minnesota Ballpark Authority was spurred when a sitting African American member was replaced by a Caucasian former legislator. Jim Davney was appointed to the Minnesota Ballpark Authority after a substitute motion to retain incumbent Justin Baylor was denied. The replacement led to accusations of anti-Black sentiment and a lack of adequate consultation, increasing pre-existing community tensions.
Council extended the SoundThinking (formerly ShotSpotter) contract by one year pending an independent audit. The contract was not expanded, however, as the Council was skeptical about the effectiveness of the platform in relation to alternative, proven initiatives. SoundThinking is a public safety technology that provides data-driven, AI-based tools to assist law enforcement and security professionals.
