(OPGOV GLOBAL) -- Some of the country’s largest grocery store chains are recalling products that were made with jalapeños after the peppers were linked to a Salmonella outbreak.
The FDA named Target, Walmart, Whole Foods, Hannaford, Kroger, and Trader Joe’s among the retailers affected.
The recalls stem from a recall originally issued by Taylor Fresh Foods at the beginning of this month.
What’s being recalled
Investigators have linked the outbreak to fresh jalapeños that were imported from Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors.
Taylor Fresh Foods said the recalled products have “Best If Used By” dates through Aug. 16, 2026.
The peppers were reportedly shipped to retail distribution centers in more than two dozen states, including Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Texas, New York, and Ohio, according to the FDA.
On Aug. 9, Taylor Fresh Foods recalled products containing jalapeños after Coast Citrus Distributors voluntarily recalled the peppers over possible Salmonella contamination.

What health officials know
The FDA reported 345 Salmonella cases across 27 states that occurred between June 19 and July 20, with 36 people hospitalized. No deaths have been reported.
Health officials interviewed 191 people who became sick, and 177 (93%) said they ate at a Mexican-style restaurant before becoming sick.
Chipotle and Qdoba were among those mentioned. Chipotle switched jalapeño suppliers and stopped serving the product at affected stores on July 20. QDOBA stopped serving jalapeños at all of its restaurants on July 28. The FDA said it does not consider the current outbreak to be an ongoing risk from either chain.
What consumers should do
People who purchased recalled Taylor Fresh Foods products should not eat them and should throw them away, according to the FDA. Refunds are available where the products were purchased.

What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a group of bacteria that can cause diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting. Symptoms typically start six hours to six days after a person is infected and can usually last four to seven days.
Most people can recover without treatment, but severe infections can sometimes require medical care. Young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems are more likely to become seriously ill.
