(CALIFORNIA) – On June 2nd, voters around California took to the polls to vote for candidates running in the primary election.
This election narrowed down many candidates, and only the top two candidates for each position will advance to the November general elections.
The positions up for election on this ballot include, but are not limited to, California governor, lieutenant governor, secretary of state, attorney general, treasurer, and controller.
This article provides an overview of the leading candidates for various positions, as well as short descriptors of each role.
All candidate names, parties, and number of votes were sourced from the California State Portal.

California Governor
The person in this role proposes state legislation, state budget and can appoint individuals to fill vacant positions in the executive state government.
These are the current four leading candidates with their political parties and number of votes:

Lieutenant Governor
California’s Lieutenant Governor acts as the Acting Governor in the case that the Governor is absent, is the president of the state senate and breaks ties within, and is a voting member of various California boards.

Secretary of State
The Secretary of State serves as the Chief Elections Officer, maintains filing for business, campaign, and lobbyist financial information, and safeguards the State Archives.

Attorney General
The Attorney General is tasked with overseeing a large variety of legal, investigative, and public safety programs, procedures, and activities. They assist local law enforcement, support criminal investigations, and oversee over 5,400 lawyers, investigators, and other employees.
