(DUBLIN, CA.) – Dublin will be hosting a celebration in honor of Juneteenth on Thursday, June 18, just one day before the actual holiday.
First recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth is the celebration of “the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed.”
This event took place two and a half years after the signing of the emancipation proclamation.
Although it only became a federal holiday many decades later, the date was celebrated for the first time only a year later by the freedmen in Texas. Instead of Juneteenth, it was referred to as "Jubilee Day."
Dublin is no stranger to hosting events for holidays that are not included in the list of typically celebrated state holidays such as Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving.
This is exemplified by their annual Saint Patrick’s Day celebration.
Even farther from the typical, more celebrated holidays is Sacramento, CA.’s tradition of celebrating Pi Day.
The main attraction at Dublin’s celebration for Juneteenth is a concert by The Best Intentions.

This group performs music of the R&B, Classic Motown and Old School genres.
According to the group's website, the group "is comprised of five talented vocalists, a Music Director, and [an] eight-piece band."
They commonly perform music by artists of the genres mentioned above from the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and on while also performing some of their original music.
Their particular showtime is from 6pm to 8pm in Emerald Glen Park, which is on the corner of Gleason Drive and Tassajara Road.
This concert is one of many concerts lined up in Dublin’s Annual Summer Concert Series.

Each concert is set to take place at the same time as Thursday’s.
Beginning earlier than the concert, however, is the Dublin Farmer’s Market.
Opening at 4pm, the Farmer’s Market features locally grown produce, baked goods, honey, flowers, hot meals and much more.
The market will continue to run throughout the concert time.
Though these details are not present in Dublin's brief description of this event, past Juneteenth celebrations also included cultural performances and food, and Black-owned business vendors.
