(MINNEAPOLIS, Minn.) – The November 3 General Elections in Minnesota and nationwide resulted in a major upset for Republicans.
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D) is the new Governor-elect of Minnesota, alongside her running mate and Lieutenant Governor-elect Ben Schierer. Approximately 360k votes were the key to Klobuchar’s barely ten-percentage-point win over Lisa Demuth (R).
Penny Flanagan (D) is now a senator-elect, beating primary competitor Michele Tafoya (R) by 10 percentage points. Democrats also won the Secretary of State, State Auditor, and Attorney General races.
Steve Simon won against incumbent Tad Jude by 13 percentage points, while Zack Filipovich took the State Auditor seat by less than 9 percentage points. Keith Ellison won Minnesota Attorney General, tipping over Ronald Schutz by 9 percentage points and fewer than 300k votes.
The sweep of wins in Minnesota contributes to the Democrats' first control of the U.S. political landscape since 2023. The Democratic Party now controls the House with 258-177 seats, and they hold ten more Senate seats than Republicans.
Even traditionally red states have turned blue, and the January political realignment has some Republicans concerned for the first time since President Trump took office.
