Empowering communities through transparent governance
(NEW YORK) -- A Democratic Socialist, an Independent, and a GOP walk into a New York City bar, and one comes out the mayor.
Zohran Mamdani fought against former New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa and won. This is the second time Mamdani beat out Cuomo, taking him down first in the Democratic Primary.
Mamdani came in at 50.4% of the vote with 1,036,051 ballots cast, and Cuomo at 41.6% with 854,995. Sliwa garnered 146,137 votes.
Before the election, The Washington Post reported on the three, and after the polls closed, the famous newspaper announced the winner, following up on their first story strongly except for using AP projections on the win.

The newspaper points out that the 34-year-old is the first Muslim mayor, while Al Jazeera also reports the win, showing the new mayor, his wife, and parents celebrating their cultural excellence. The media outlet touts social media posts from Bernie Sanders to former President Barack Obama.
“Congratulations to all the Democratic candidates who won tonight. It’s a reminder that when we come together around strong, forward-looking leaders who care about the issues that matter, we can win,” Obama wrote on X, with Al Jazeera noting, "Obama, who had praised Mamdani’s 'impressive” campaign but declined to endorse him, did not comment on the Democratic candidate’s win."
“Starting at 1% in the polls, @ZohranKMamdani pulled off one of the great political upsets in modern American history,” Sanders wrote on X. “Yes. We CAN create a government that represents working people and not the 1%. I look forward to working with Zohran as he builds a city that works for all.”

Al Jazeera also reports, "Voters in California have approved a plan to redraw the western state’s congressional map in the party’s favour, expanding a national battle over redistricting that will shape the race for the US House of Representatives."
While Al Jazeera reports that "The passage of Proposition 50 gives Democrats a shot at winning as many as five additional seats, just enough to blunt Texas Republicans’ move to redraw their own maps to pick up five Republican seats at Trump’s urging," OpGov.ai founder Chirag Kathrani also shares his opinion.
"While New Yorkers rejected blatant corruption, where the race was between two democrats, one whom Trump endorsed and also threatened the New Yorkers, but the statue of liberty stood strong, and many came together to elect a fairly independent candidate," Kathrani said after the election.
"On the other end, California gave in to the fear of Trump and voted to remove independent drawing of the boundaries," he added.
