(YOLO COUNTY, CA.) — Yolo County sheriff’s detectives arrested a 34-year-old man on suspicion of attempted murder after a victim was found suffering from approximately 14 stab wounds near the Woodland city limits early Aug. 21, according to the Yolo County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to the area of East Main Street during the early morning hours and found a victim with multiple stab wounds to the neck, torso and extremities, the Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook.
Deputies provided aid before the victim was transported to a local trauma center, where authorities said the person remains under medical care. The victim’s identity and current condition were not released.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies identified a crime scene that extended a significant distance and requested detectives to assist with the investigation.
Investigators later identified Hector Nieves, 34, described by the Sheriff’s Office as a Woodland transient, as a suspect in the case.
Authorities said Nieves had been contacted by deputies approximately two hours before the stabbing as part of a separate patrol contact. During that encounter, deputies conducted a probation search and their body-worn cameras recorded images of the clothing Nieves was wearing, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies also documented a red Land Rover that authorities said Nieves was driving and reportedly living in. He was released following that contact.
As detectives investigated the stabbing, they obtained surveillance footage from nearby water treatment facilities. The Sheriff’s Office said the surveillance system captured audio investigators believe was associated with the assault and footage showing Nieves’ Land Rover leaving the area.
Investigators said the surveillance evidence, information gathered during the earlier deputy contact and other evidence developed during the investigation led them to identify Nieves as the suspect.
At approximately 7:45 a.m., undercover detectives located Nieves and the Land Rover parked in the 2200 block of Bronze Star Drive in Woodland, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
Nieves was taken into custody without incident after detectives and patrol deputies coordinated his arrest. Authorities said there was no further threat to the public.
The Sheriff’s Office said Nieves was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, felony battery and violating probation. He was booked into the Yolo County Jail, where authorities said he was being held on $400,000 bail.
The Sheriff’s Office credited deputies and detectives with quickly identifying and locating a suspect, pointing to the earlier patrol contact, body-worn camera footage, surveillance evidence and other investigative information.
An arrest represents an allegation of criminal conduct. The charges, if any, ultimately filed in the case are determined through the judicial process, and Nieves is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
