(GARY, Minn.) – Deputies were dispatched to Who’s Place in Gary on October 4 to break up a bar fight. On arrival, officers noted a large crowd had gathered outside.
According to witnesses and victims, a man later identified as Christopher James Mortrud (36) of Bagley refused to leave after the bar owner attempted to kick him out. Mortrud was asked to leave after verbally assaulting the bar owner.
The argument escalated and a bystander, identified as Victim 1, stepped in between the owner and Mortrud. At this point, Mortrud allegedly punched Victim 1 in the face, dislocating his jaw. Victim 1 was transferred to Fargo after a local hospital was unable to reduce the swelling in his jaw.
Several witnesses and the bar owner identified Mortrud as the assailant by his distinctive T-shirt, which matched a team on the dart league tournament roster. Mortrud could face felony assault charges under Minn. Stat. 609.223.1 for causing substantial bodily harm. If convicted, he may face up to five years in prison and/or a $10,000 fine.
