(DANVILLE, Calif.) — On Sunday, October 11, the Step Up for Down Syndrome Walk & Family Picnic will be held at Oak Hill Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, this annual event “brings the community together for a day of fun activities, inspirational walkers and record-breaking fundraising,” according to its organizers, the Down’s Syndrome Connection of the Bay Area (DSCBA).
The DSCBA, a Danville-based nonprofit, was established in 1998 with a goal to “empower, inspire, and support people with Down syndrome, their families, and the community that serves them, while fostering awareness and acceptance in all areas of life.” Step Up for Down Syndrome allows the larger community to help support the organization’s mission.
The event centers around a quarter-mile walk around the park, while participants are cheered on by family and friends. Attendees can also enjoy family-friendly activities, including “Lawn Games, Face Painting, Character Appearances,” food, and a DJ.
The DSCBA hopes to raise $150,000 to help people with Down syndrome and their families. To date, the organization said that $53,500 had been raised. According to the DSCBA, the Quest Foundation, another Danville-based charitable organization, will match donations up to $75,000.

OpGov.News reached out to the DSCBA for comment, however, at the time of publication, had not received a response.
According to the event’s webpage, there are multiple ways to get involved. Individuals can register for themselves, join participating teams, or register as a “Virtual Team Captain,” a non-attendee who still participates in fundraising digitally. While it is too late for attendees to obtain a custom shirt, most remaining registration options are free. Registration is required.
The event also includes rewards for the largest teams and the five teams with the most funds raised. Other entertainment includes a “Dance Party with DJ Brian,” a “Team cheer and Community Awards” event, and more.

A picnic in the park is incomplete without food, and while the event will have tamales, hot dogs and ice cream for sale, attendees can pre-order meals from Hazy BBQ until October 9 at 12 p.m. Attendees are also invited to bring their own picnic foods.
The DSCBA describes the event as a “heartwarming day of fun, connection, and celebration” and encourages members of the community to volunteer, donate, and support its work helping people with Down syndrome and their families.
“The most powerful moment?” the DSCBA asked rhetorically, “Cheering loudly at the finish line as we proudly recognize our amazing members with Down syndrome and celebrate their accomplishments. It’s the highlight of our year, and we hope you’ll be part of it!”
