Empowering communities through transparent governance

Dallas’ Department of Sanitation may not be in favor of sticking with its commitment to cleanliness.
Over 40,000 gallons of trash have been collected in the neighborhood of Deep Ellum, located east of downtown. This is a feat for the community, but surprisingly, the trash collection had nothing to do with the Department of Sanitation at all.
Opgov.ai made contact with the Sanitation Director of Dallas’s Department of Public Works to learn about the trash collection process within the city and how it is maintained on roads and highways. The platform additionally asked about the city’s commitment to protecting and maintaining a clean community.
Nick Starling, manager of public information, responded with outdated slide decks for opgov.ai’s viewing pleasure, but declined the opportunity to provide clarity on the city’s behalf. While the slide decks were helpful, there remains a disconnect between the government and the community regarding commitments to the health and well-being of the city itself.
Unfortunately, in the wake of climate change and an environmental crisis, slideshows are not going to protect the communities of Dallas. The city requires a call to action and a certain allegiance to the prosperity of these communities.
In a brief conversation with Stephanie Keller-Hudiberg, executive director at the Deep Ellum Foundation, Opgov.ai learned that her institution is in charge of overseeing public improvement for Deep Ellum’s district. The team that she works with collects litter in the Public Improvement District for Deep Ellum.
“Our team collects trash daily in the Deep Ellum PID. We will continue to do so to foster an inviting environment for our millions of visitors each year”, Stephanie explained.
Despite the Department of Sanitation’s inability to do so, a steadfastness and unwavering commitment to the health and restoration of the community is being upheld on account of the Deep Ellum PID.
Opgov.ai will continue to shed light on the sanitation situation in the local areas of Dallas as well as maintain a relationship with the foundations and parties willing to uplift the community by lending a helping hand.
Concerned residents can also visit the Deep Ellum Foundation, which offers an app to report trash issues and other neighborhood concerns.
