Empowering communities through transparent governance
(SAN FRANCISCO) -- What does the Winter holiday season look like in San Francisco for the less fortunate?
Bleak for those who do not have the finances for essential food, clothes, and supplies.

However, “San Francisco City Impact hosts four holiday outreaches this season, and there is one outreach left: Christmas Day,” according to the local groups website.
San Francisco City Impact also promise “Christmas toy giveaways, each event has been filled with food, fun, and community for children, families, and residents in the Tenderloin.”

San Francisco’s Homeless Children’s Network (HCN) makes giving easy, with residents able to simply click here. There is a need for a wide range of necessities, from school supplies to non-perishable foods and clothing.
Items also range in price, making it possible to spend a little to give a lot.

San Francisco sponsors a holiday event for all to enjoy at no cost.
The Let’s Glow SF light festival takes place from December 5-14 in 2025 in Downtown San Francisco. The event features entertaining projections across large buildings within the area.

Most festivities come at a financial cost. However minimal, not everyone in San Francisco is able to afford the products that are on sale, tickets to attend any events, or even housing or food. One might wonder if any organizations within the city are doing anything to assist the less fortunate.
The answer is yes.
The following question is whether it’s enough.
There is one organization called Hindu Sayam Seva Sangh (HSS) conducting what they call “Seva Diwali,” which is, essentially, a dharmic community that comes together during the holiday season to collect and donate food to the less fortunate. While the initiative is national, it has made broad steps within the San Francisco Bay Area in particular. They collected 40,000 pounds of food within the Bay Area to support the less fortunate.
They have also partnered with local organizations to feed the homeless and provide meals directly to struggling school students. While it is good that the Hindu Sayam Seva Sangh (HSS) is providing something to the city of San Francisco this Winter, in addition to other areas, one might wonder if anybody else is doing anything, or if anything else is going on.

The answer is disappointing since there appears to be a lack of altruism this year. There is more holiday commercialism in San Francisco than there is giving. However, there are still some who are not giving up, like the Salvation Army.
The local San Francisco chapter provides food and personal delivery service, asking for volunteers this season. It is never to late to lend a hand simply by clicking here to pick a shift.
In San Francisco, it does not snow during the Winter. It only becomes a more cold version of what it was earlier in the year. In the city, the human spirit changes during the holidays as much as the weather each season: slightly, but not enough for the less fortunate.
