(SACRAMENTO, CA.) — A coordinated retail theft case involving four young suspects and more than $4,300 in stolen beauty and fragrance products has generated thousands of reactions online, ranging from praise for law enforcement to heated debates about parenting, race, criminal justice, and apparently the current price of Bath & Body Works candles.
According to an Instagram post by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office, the incident took place on May 22, when 18-year-olds Ijanae McClendon and Saniya Douglas, along with a 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old girl, allegedly carried out coordinated thefts at two Bath & Body Works locations and one Ulta store in Sacramento County.

Authorities say the suspects entered the stores together, selected large quantities of merchandise, loaded the items into store-provided bags and totes, and exited without paying. The reported loss totaled approximately $4,322 — or roughly the retail value of three scented candles and half a bottle of designer shampoo in today’s economy.
Deputies later located the suspects’ vehicle after receiving a description and detained all four individuals. Loss prevention employees positively identified the group during a field show-up.
McClendon and Douglas were booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail on charges of Grand Theft, Conspiracy, and Organized Retail Theft. The two juveniles were booked into the Sacramento County Juvenile Detention Center on the same charges.
But while the arrests themselves were relatively straightforward, the online reaction quickly turned into its own form of organized chaos.
Many commenters praised the Sheriff’s Office for making arrests in a retail theft case, with comments like “Solid work Sac Sheriff,” and “The days of walking in and walking out with hella stuff are over.”
Others focused on the suspects’ ages, with one commenter writing, “It’s sad to see such young adults make decisions that could affect the rest of their lives.”
Then there were the comments that reminded everyone why social media comment sections should probably come with warning labels.

One widely-liked comment joked, “Stole all that from Bath & Body Works to still smell bad,” while another added, “Imagine getting arrested over lotion.” Several commenters debated whether the theft was worth the long-term consequences of criminal charges, while others blamed parenting, social media culture, California laws, or modern society in general — all within the span of about six scrolls.
The thread also exposed deeper tensions online, as some users criticized racist remarks appearing in the comments while others argued over whether public reaction changes depending on who commits a crime. Somewhere in the middle of the debate, at least one person simply asked the Sheriff’s Office to solve their father’s murder case instead.
Meanwhile, another commenter offered perhaps the most Sacramento-specific observation of the day: “You can’t even pay me enough to steal in Sac County. They don’t play.”
As of Wednesday evening, no word had been released on the condition of the recovered merchandise, though several social media users appeared genuinely concerned about the fate of the candles.
