(SACRAMENTO, CA.) — The Sacramento Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence checkpoint Friday night as part of an effort to identify impaired drivers and reduce alcohol- and drug-related crashes.
The checkpoint is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, through 1 a.m. Saturday at an undisclosed location within the city of Sacramento.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing where impaired driving-related crashes have occurred. The department did not disclose the location of Friday night’s operation.
“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Sgt. Anna Mahoney said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”
While DUI enforcement is often associated with alcohol, police reminded drivers that impairment can also be caused by prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs. Drivers are encouraged to read warning labels and understand how medications may affect their ability to safely operate a vehicle.
California also allows medicinal and recreational marijuana use, but driving while impaired by marijuana remains illegal.
The department said the primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road and discouraging people from driving after consuming alcohol or other substances that can affect their ability to drive safely.
Drivers arrested and charged with a first-time DUI can face an average of approximately $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, according to the department.
Police are encouraging anyone who plans to drink or use an impairing substance Friday night to arrange for a sober driver, use a rideshare service or find another safe way home.
