(SACRAMENTO, CA.) — Sacramento has been recognized as one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan areas for jobs and career opportunities, earning a spot on LinkedIn's 2026 Cities on the Rise list.
The annual ranking highlights 25 emerging U.S. metropolitan areas where hiring is accelerating, employers are expanding and professionals are increasingly choosing to build their careers. Sacramento ranked among cities such as Austin, Charlotte, Richmond and Salt Lake City, reflecting continued momentum across the region's economy.

According to LinkedIn, Sacramento ranks at number 19, strengthening its position as a center for agriculture, biotechnology and innovation, while attracting residents looking for an alternative to California's larger metropolitan areas.
The recognition comes as many workers continue reevaluating where they want to live and work. LinkedIn found that nearly 80% of professionals say they feel unprepared to find a job in 2026, while two-thirds report they "work to live, not live to work," signaling that affordability and quality of life are playing a larger role in relocation decisions.
"Finding the right place to build a career has become just as important as finding the right job," Laura Lorenzetti, LinkedIn's vice president and executive editor, said in announcing the rankings. "Career opportunity is expanding well beyond the traditional hubs. From growing AI ecosystems in Albany and Salt Lake City, to healthcare in Indianapolis, we're seeing more cities create new avenues for career development."
LinkedIn said its rankings are based on proprietary platform data measuring where hiring is increasing, where employers are posting more jobs and where professionals are relocating to pursue new opportunities.
Sacramento's Growing Economy
Sacramento has continued to diversify its economy in recent years, moving beyond its long-standing role as California's state capital.
The region has experienced growth in biotechnology, healthcare, agriculture technology, clean energy, government services and innovation-focused industries. Major employers in both the public and private sectors have expanded operations, while the area's relatively lower housing costs—compared to the San Francisco Bay Area and Silicon Valley—have attracted workers seeking more affordable options.
Sacramento has also benefited from continued migration within California, with many professionals relocating from higher-cost coastal regions while maintaining access to Northern California's technology ecosystem.

LinkedIn's top five cities for 2026 are:
Augusta, Georgia
Richmond, Virginia
Reno, Nevada
North Port-Bradenton-Sarasota, Florida
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania
Even higher than Sacramento on the list was neighboring Reno, which ranked highly as number 3, reflecting continued economic growth across parts of the greater Northern California region.

LinkedIn's Cities on the Rise rankings identify metropolitan areas experiencing the strongest momentum for career growth outside of many of the nation's traditional employment hubs.
The company said the rankings analyze three primary indicators:
Growth in hiring activity
Increases in employer job postings
Professional migration into metropolitan areas
The report is intended to help job seekers identify emerging employment markets while providing insight into broader economic and workforce trends shaping the future of work.
As employers continue to expand outside traditional coastal technology centers, LinkedIn said mid-sized metropolitan areas are increasingly becoming destinations for professionals seeking career advancement, affordability and improved quality of life.
