(SACRAMENTO, CA) — With warmer weather signaling the unofficial start of river season, the city of Sacramento is reminding families, boaters and outdoor enthusiasts to a free “River Ready” water safety workshop on May 16. The three‑hour event runs from 9 a.m. to noon at the Sacramento Marina, 2710 Ramp Way, and aims to equip the community with practical skills before summer recreation ramps up.
The workshop also marks the beginning of National Safe Boating Week, held May 16–22 each year to highlight safe practices on local waterways.

The event is meant to give residents direct access to the experts, tools and information that support safe and environmentally responsible use of the Sacramento River.
“Sacramento’s waterways are one of our community’s greatest assets, and River Ready is about helping people enjoy them safely and responsibly,” Marina Manager Kendra Gray said in an official city update. “By bringing together boating specialists, first responders and environmental partners, we’re giving residents hands‑on opportunities to learn what they need before they head out this summer.”
Participants can receive free vessel safety inspections (by land or water), browse a nautical swap meet, and watch live fire boat demonstrations. Freedom Boat Club and Sacramento Boat Rentals will also offer demonstration rides. A lifejacket giveaway will be available while supplies last.
Public outreach booths will share information on pollution prevention, invasive species awareness, fish studies and clean‑water practices.
Partner organizations include the Sacramento Fire Department, Sacramento Police Department Marine Enforcement Detail, Sacramento Sheriff Marine Enforcement, Department of Utilities, California Department of Water Resources, Drowning Accident Rescue Team, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, America’s Boating Club, TowBoatUS Sacramento, and Keep Our Waters Clean.

Located just south of downtown, the Sacramento Marina serves as a central access point for boating, fishing and waterfront activities, and routinely collaborates with public safety and environmental agencies on education and preparedness initiatives.
Organizers encourage new boaters, families, anglers and community members of all ages to attend and learn more about safety gear, emergency readiness, clean‑water habits and recreation opportunities along the river.
