(POLAND) - Prominent Russian exile artist Robert Kuzovkov (aka Semyon Skrepetsky), 44, was shot by an unknown assailant June 15 in Biala Podlaska, Poland. The gunman, who remains at large, walked up to Kuzovkov and fired five shots at him. Once he fell, the attacker continued to fire.
The excessive force leads authorities to believe Kuzovkov was deliberately targeted. A full investigation has been launched, and police are currently collecting surveillance footage and forensic evidence. Two Belarusian citizens were detained for questioning, but haven’t been charged in connection to the case.
Kuzovkov was an outspoken critic of President of The Russian Federation Vladmir Putin, and was known for anti-Kremlin focused artwork. Days before his shooting, he staged a protest outside Berlin’s Russian Embassy. Kuzovkov, who was living in Poland at the time of his shooting, left Russia in 2021. His friends noted he had previously received threats related to his activism. Police haven’t ruled out a political motive, but can’t confirm it either.
