Empowering communities through transparent governance
(ROSEVILLE, CA) — On February 1, the Roseville Police Department said goodbye to one of its most devoted guardians, K‑9 Mateo. Just two days shy of his planned retirement, Mateo’s watch ended after a sudden decline from an aggressive form of cancer. According to the Facebook post, his final moments were spent surrounded by love, honor, and gratitude for a life that made a difference.
Mateo’s story began in 2019 when he was carefully selected and paired with Officer Kyle Gruchow. Together, they became an inseparable team—logging more than 1,300 hours of training, responding to nearly 1,000 calls, and helping bring 153 suspects to justice. But Mateo was more than numbers; he was a symbol of loyalty and courage, a partner who gave his all to keep his community safe.
“As a fiercely loyal partner with a tenacious spirit, Mateo proved that heart and determination matter more than size,” the Roseville Police Department shared. “His service and sacrifice will not be forgotten, and his impact on our community will be felt for years to come.”
The news touched thousands. As of 3:17 p.m. today, the department’s Facebook tribute had drawn 608 comments and more than 5,900 likes—a testament to the bond Mateo shared not only with his handler but with an entire city.

Voices from the Community

Lauren Riley: “I miss when I worked at VCA animal hospital and the officers would come in with these pups— they’re always the very best behaved and brightened everyone’s day.”
Mateo’s journey reminds us that heroes come in all forms—sometimes on four legs, with a wagging tail and eyes full of trust. He crossed the Rainbow Bridge with the same dignity he carried on duty, leaving paw prints on the hearts of those who knew him and those who simply admired his service.
Run free, Mateo. Your watch is over, but your legacy will never fade.
