(ROSEVILLE, CA) — Drivers traveling through Roseville Friday night may encounter a DUI checkpoint as police step up enforcement aimed at getting impaired drivers off the road.
The Roseville Police Department will conduct the checkpoint tonight, Aug. 14, from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within city limits, according to the department's social media post.
Police said checkpoint locations are selected based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The department said the primary purpose of the operation is to promote public safety by identifying and removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.

The announcement drew largely supportive responses on social media, although some commenters questioned why DUI checkpoints are announced in advance.
“I wish you did it 3-4 times a week unannounced,” one commenter wrote in response to the department’s Facebook post.
Another questioned whether advance notice could undermine the effort.
“Why do you even warn people?” the commenter wrote. “You are telling these drivers to use Uber that night and keep doing what they are doing on a different day!”
Others welcomed the enforcement effort, with commenters writing “Go get ‘em!!” and “GOOD JOB!!!!!” Another urged people to drive safely, noting that a DUI “will cost you a lot.”
Roseville police also reminded drivers that impairment is not limited to alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can interfere with a person's ability to safely operate a vehicle.
While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal in California, driving under the influence of marijuana remains illegal.
According to the department, drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended driver's license.
The department has not publicly disclosed the location of tonight's checkpoint.
Funding for the operation was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
