(LIVERMORE, CA) — A potential disaster was narrowly avoided in the Tri-Valley when quick intervention by local law enforcement and firefighters contained multiple wildland fires before they could reach nearby structures.
The incident began on Sunday afternoon, August 26, when an alert Livermore police officer spotted two large plumes of smoke rising from a vacant field near the intersection of North Murrieta Boulevard and Portola Avenue. After inspection of the area, officers observed a suspect carrying a torch while walking away from burning grass.
Upon further investigation of the source of the plumes and flames, they spotted 36-year-old Gabriel Bentancourt (also spelled Bentancourt in some local reports), a local resident of Livermore, walking away from the burning field. Officers observed that he was carrying a torch as he left the scene.
Police immediately took Betancourt into custody without incident, arresting him on multiple charges including arson. Crews from the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department arrived rapidly on scene to combat the flames. Firefighters contained and fully extinguished the flames, which consumed roughly 6,000 square feet of dry vegetation before they could spread to adjacent properties or commercial structures.

Law enforcement and official reports have not released any information regarding a motive behind the incident. The published updates from Livermore Police Department only confirm the details of his observation on scene and subsequent arrest.
Local authorities emphasized how critical rapid public safety coordination is during high-risk summer conditions. Commenting on the quick response in official department releases, Livermore police representatives noted, “Thanks to the sharp eyes of our officer and the quick response of the Livermore-Pleasanton Fire Department, the fires were contained before causing major damage or injuries”.
The investigation into the incident remains ongoing as local public safety agencies continue to maintain heightened vigilance across the dry Tri-Valley hillsides. Law enforcement officials encourage residents to immediately report any suspicious behavior or signs of smoke to local dispatch centers.
