(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M)-- No members of the public were present during the July 21st Albuquerque Public School Board of Education Community Engagement Committee meeting.
OpGov.News captured the 39-minute meeting and posted it on the platform.
“The meeting spent considerable time celebrating the 'incredible' number of 4,122 survey responses for an upcoming July listening session on transportation and food services, with board members repeatedly praising their own efforts and staff,” the platform reports. “This emphasis on internal success and promotional aspects, such as electric bus tours and food samples, sometimes overshadowed the actual substance of community concerns.”

Topics like the State of the District and right-sizing school districts were also covered.
School Board Committee members Janelle Astorga Ramos, Christy Albright, Courtney Jackson, and Gabrielle Duran Blakey were all present.
Deputy Superintendent of Operations Antonio Gonzales said electric buses will be available to the public on July 27. Gonzales said the public will be able to tour the buses starting at 5 p.m.
“Staff will be outside to showcase this new transportation method we have available for the public,” Gonzales said. “It will only grow moving into the future.”
The public can sample new food items, which will be served in schools this year.
Jackson was impressed and surprised by the number of survey responses for the July listening session. She wants to continue to see participation in surveys.
“Whatever it was worked, and we need to do that again,” Jackson said.
Gonzales said there were changes between the July listening session and previous ones.
“One thing that was different about this survey is that it was led by our Sapper team,” Gonzales said. “They held us to polish the survey, push out the survey, and we relied on their expertise for the latest survey.”
Albuquerque Public Schools Chief Communications Officer Johanna King provided an update on State of the District, which is scheduled for August 31.
King said the event will be live-streamed on YouTube, and a recent APS graduate will be the guest speaker.
The event concludes with an evening panel featuring local education leaders.
Jackson emphasized she wants the APS speaker to engage with their audience. She also requested the speaker understand why they’re attending State of the District.
“Unless they are given that specific direction, things can meander, and the point can get lost,” Jackson said. “Whoever it is, if you could just reiterate positivity and draw a line between being an APS student and an improvement in their personal outcome.”
The next Community Engagement Committee meeting will take place on August 19.
