(PORTLAND, OR.) — Portland’s city council meeting on Thursday began as a continuation of the previous day’s failure to elect a new president.
But just over an hour into the meeting, a recess was called. When the meeting was reconvened, it was announced that there had been a shooting in East Portland involving U.S. Customs and Border Patrol.

Council President Elana Pirtle-Guiney said that as far as she knew, those who had been shot were still alive.

This comes the day following the fatal ICE shooting in Minnesota.
The council members were clearly shaken and explored postponing the meeting. They initially attempted to continue with their business of electing the council’s president.
Ultimately, the decision was made to recess the council until Wed. Jan. 14th at 9am, when the council would continue its election proceedings.
In a press release, Portland Police Chief Bob Day urged calm.

"We are still in the early stages of this incident," said Chief Bob Day. "We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more."
