(Asbury Park, NJ.) — Jersey shore drivers going out along Ocean Ave on ‘thirsty’ Thursday should be aware that the Monmouth County Shore Regional Task Force will be conducting driving while intoxicated (DWI) stops on Aug. 27, according to Asbury Park Police Department's social media.
Police officers from Sea Bright, Monmouth Beach, Long Branch, Deal, Allenhurst, Asbury Park and the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office will be “specifically assigned to patrol for intoxicated drivers,” from 9 p.m. Thurs. to 1 a.m. Fri., the Facebook post says.
The DWI Task Force website explains that checkpoints encourage responsible driving by increasing the risk of arrest, educating the public on the dangers of driving under the influence, and detecting and apprehending those who are found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
“The probability of a fatal crash rises significantly after 0.05% blood alcohol concentration (BAC) and even more rapidly after 0.08%,” the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety website says. “Drivers with very high BACs (at or above 0.15%) have a very high risk of dying in a crash or getting severely injured.”
Alternative options for travel while enjoying a night out include ride share apps like Uber and Lift, public transportation, or designating a sober driver. Additionally, FeelGood electric shuttles provide free rides from Asbury Park, Belmar, Bradley Beach and Avon running until 2 a.m. on Thurs.
“If you plan to go out for ‘thirsty Thursday’, be responsible, plan ahead, and get a designated driver,” said the Facebook post. “Enjoy the shore and make it home safe.”
“One choice can change everything,” added the post. “DWI costs more than you think.”
The DWI Task Force’s mission is to preserve life and property, the prevention of impaired driving, and the promotion of traffic safety, according to their website.
“DWI Checkpoints have served as an effective educational tool and overall deterrent, having saved untold lives throughout Monmouth County and the state,” says the DWI Task Force website.
