(MINNEAPOLIS, MN.) - Conflict continued to surround the redevelopment of George Floyd Square at the Minneapolis City Council meeting June 11. The Council rejected the proposal to make Minnesota Agape Movement the developer for a revamping of the old Speedway gas station into the Peoples Way site. Council members believe there was inadequate engagement and input accepted from the community, and brought up issues surrounding administrative mismanagement of the project, especially amid recent community feedback indicating a preference to choose Rise and Remember as the developer.

Some council members argued the process didn’t hold true to commitments made regarding the site. The rejection creates further delays in the redevelopment of the site. Tensions between the Council and the Mayor’s administration continue, with concerns around a lack of transparency, collaboration, and accountability. Council highlighted the differences regarding each entity’s level of community involvement when decision making.

The Council also took steps to increase the accountability of law enforcement officers by limiting the use of masks.
In regular business, the Council approved basic administrative items, and discussed and promoted multiple upcoming events and celebrations within the community. Resolutions honoring LGBTQIA+ Pride, Juneteenth, Immigrant Heritage, the Special Olympics, and Gun Violence awareness were all passed unanimously.
