(OPGOV GLOBAL) – Mars Petcare US, Inc. has voluntarily recalled two lots of PEDIGREE® High Protein Chopped Chicken & Duck Flavor wet dog food after discovering the products, which had been sent to a third-party vendor for destruction following failed quality control, were apparently diverted and sold through unauthorized channels in the United States states the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Unlike many recalls that stem from manufacturing issues discovered after products reach store shelves, Mars said these specific cans had already been removed from normal distribution because they failed the company's stringent quality standards. The company later learned the products appear to have been fraudulently reintroduced into the marketplace and is now working with authorities to determine how they entered the consumer supply chain.
The recalled food may contain sharp pieces of metal and plastic, creating a risk of choking, lacerations, or intestinal blockages if consumed by dogs. Mars said it has received no reports of pet illnesses or injuries associated with the recalled lots to date.
Veterinarians advise pet owners to monitor dogs that may have consumed the recalled food for symptoms including vomiting, excessive drooling, difficulty swallowing, lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain, and to seek veterinary care if any symptoms develop.
