(Sacramento, CA) —The Sacramento Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday afternoon, Jan. 29, following reports of a robbery in progress at a bank on the 1600 block of Response Road.
According to details shared on the department’s official X social media page, patrol officers were dispatched just before 4:30 p.m. after a caller reported a white male adult in his 30s or 40s wearing a green jacket, blue shirt, and carrying a black backpack. Responding officers observed an individual matching the description running toward Exposition Parkway with what appeared to be a firearm.
Officers pursued the suspect, and during the encounter, an officer-involved shooting occurred. Emergency medical aid was provided at the scene, and the suspect was transported by the Sacramento Fire Department to a local hospital, where he was pronounced deceased. Investigators later determined the firearm recovered at the scene was an imitation weapon. No officers were injured during the incident.
The Sacramento Police Department stated on X social media that multiple units are involved in the investigation, including the Homicide Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and Professional Standards Unit, with oversight from the Office of Public Safety Accountability and the Sacramento County District Attorney’s Office. The department’s Force Investigation Team will review policy, tactics, and training related to the use of force.
Under City Council policy on Police Use of Force and SB 1421, all video and audio related to the incident will be released to the public within 30 days.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the Sacramento Police Department’s dispatch center at (916) 808-5471 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357). Anonymous tips can also be submitted via the “P3 Tips” smartphone app, and callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
