(DUBLIN, Calif.) - Alameda County prosecutors have filed murder charges against two Dublin residents after a fatal shooting at the Dublin Sports Grounds on Sept. 26, turning a weekend police investigation into a closely watched local court case.
The Alameda County District Attorney's Office announced Sept. 30 that Shouyong Zhang and Shili Chen, both 77, were charged in the death of Jonathan McKinsey, 40, of Dublin. Prosecutors also filed allegations of personal use of a firearm causing death and a special circumstance of lying in wait. The allegations have not been proven in court, and the defendants are presumed innocent unless convicted.
Dublin Police Services said the shooting occurred at about 3:08 p.m. in the parking lot of the Dublin Sports Grounds at 6700 Dublin Boulevard. According to the department, a police sergeant driving nearby saw a man lying in the parking lot as dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls. Officers found McKinsey with multiple gunshot wounds, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said witnesses helped officers locate and detain Zhang and Chen within minutes. Both are Dublin residents and are McKinsey's parents-in-law. Authorities said after the arrests that there were no outstanding suspects and no known continuing threat to the public.
The case moved to the East County Hall of Justice this week. The District Attorney's Office said the pair were scheduled for arraignment Sept. 30. Local court reporting from the hearing said the proceeding was postponed, that both defendants remained held without bail, and that neither had entered a plea as of Wednesday. Chen was expected to be appointed a public defender, while Zhang appeared with appointed counsel.
The charges carry serious potential consequences. The District Attorney's Office said that, if convicted as charged, each defendant could face life in prison without the possibility of parole. That outcome is not automatic and would depend on the court process, including proof of the charged offenses and special-circumstance allegations.
For Dublin residents, the case is notable not only because of the severity of the charges but also because the shooting happened in a heavily used public recreation complex. Dublin Sports Grounds is a 22.8-acre city park with ball fields, soccer fields, a playground, picnic facilities, and parking near the Civic Center.
The shooting also unfolded close to several civic facilities in central Dublin. The Sports Grounds sits along Dublin Boulevard beside the Civic Center, and the criminal case is being handled a short distance away at the East County Hall of Justice. The proximity has made the incident especially visible to residents who regularly use the area for youth sports, recreation and city services.
Police and prosecutors have released only portions of the evidence publicly. The District Attorney's charging announcement establishes the accusations now before the court, but questions about motive and the full sequence of events remain matters for the ongoing investigation and court proceedings.
Dublin Police Services said detectives are continuing to examine evidence and asked anyone with information about the shooting to contact Sgt. Ahmad Mateen at 925-786-7989.
