(MINNEAPOLIS, MN.) - The Minneapolis City Council met Apr. 9 for a regular meeting covering a wide array of issues. Council members approved the meeting minutes for Mar. 26, then started addressing a mixed agenda. City Council members recognized Mar. 31 as International Transgender Day of Visibility and set High School Voter Registration week for Apr. 19-25.
Key decisions regarding city position appointments were voted on. City Attorney Kristen Anderson was reappointed, while Margaret Anderson Kellaher was narrowly reappointed COO. Toddrick Barnette’s nomination by Mayor Jacob Frey for Commissioner of Community Safety was narrowly rejected. The vote to reject Barnette’s nomination created significant disagreement, which culminated in Mayor Frey revealing he was going to attempt to veto the decision.
Several policy items were referred, including all items regarding adult bathhouses and sex venues, a decriminalization ordinance on drug paraphernalia, and a proposal for commercial pre-eviction notice.
Ordinances covering homelessness, eviction notices, and hotel regulations were sent to the committee; the public hearing is scheduled for Apr. 21. New ordinances, including a potential data center moratorium and updating ethics education requirements, were introduced as well. The Council also postponed a community health services proposal based on logistical concerns.
Hennepin County Medical Center funding was unanimously approved, and the Council reported positive feedback on waived business license fees; a joint meeting with the city auditor is slated for Apr. 22 to review past actions in specific cases. The next regular Minneapolis City Council meeting will be held on Apr. 23.
