(SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.) -- Proposition G is on track to fail, leaving the Upper Great Highway closed to private vehicles and preserving its current use as Sunset Dunes Park.
Prop G is a contentious ordinance to close the park to recreational use during the work week, allowing cars Monday through Friday and recreational use on weekends and holidays.

Proponents of the measure have highlighted the fact that much of the opposition to the proposition is located in the areas of San Francisco furthest from the park, who would not have to absorb the traffic that the highway closure creates in residential areas, particularly during commuting hours. They praised a weekday closure as a fair compromise on a contentious issue.
However, opponents of the measure said it would diminish Sunset Dunes since park infrastructure would need to be torn out if the road is reopened to vehicles on weekdays.

San Francisco Supervisor Alan Wong, who introduced and backed the measure, issued a statement saying that “While Proposition G did not pass as I had hoped, I respect the decision of San Francisco voters and remain proud to have supported a compromise that reflected concerns raised by many Sunset residents. My focus moving forward will be on addressing the neighborhood impacts of the permanent closure.”
