Empowering communities through transparent governance
(SAN RAMON)— Council member Marisol Rubio is the next mayor pro tem, expanding her responsibilities as the city council prepares for its 2026 agenda.
The position is a one-year term, with the city council typically selecting a new mayor pro tem each November. Talks of Dublin’s new mayor pro tem are covered here: Dublin City Council Talks Finances, Will Discuss New Mayor Pro Tem. The annual election is taking place nationwide, with OpGov.ai noting Tallahassee, Florida's new mayor pro tem.
The role places Rubio second in command, responsible for filling in when the mayor is unavailable, representing the city at events, and supporting policy and administrative transitions.
The brief appointment process followed the council’s long-standing practice of selecting the next qualifying member based on tenure and service. With no public comments submitted and no objections from the dais, the council unanimously approved Rubio for the position. Her term begins at the Dec. 9 meeting and, due to the city’s even-year election cycle, will continue through January 2027.

The Mayor Pro Tem role rotates annually and is considered the council’s second-highest leadership position. The officeholder supports the mayor in overseeing citywide initiatives and often steps into additional community-facing duties throughout the year.
Council members thanked outgoing Vice Mayor Sridhar Verose for his service, noting the smooth coordination between the mayor and vice mayor during the previous term.
Rubio thanked the council for its support as she accepted the new role.
“I’ve had the incredible pleasure of working with all of you,” Rubio said. “I’m really looking forward to serving to the best of my ability, supporting our community, and advocating for you.”

What This Means for the City of San Ramon
Rubio’s appointment signals continuity in the council’s leadership approach as San Ramon enters a year expected to include policy reviews, long-term planning, and continued regional coordination on housing and transportation. The Mayor Pro Tem will play a key role in representing the city at joint-agency meetings, stepping into mayoral duties when needed, and helping guide community engagement as the council prepares for its next budget cycle.
The position also allows Rubio to take a more prominent role in public-facing events and citywide initiatives, ensuring consistent leadership as the council navigates a period that includes project updates, state-mandated reporting, and preparations for the 2026 agenda.
