(LIVERMORE,CA)--Deputy Sheriff of San Mateo and Livermore resident, Steven Romero has been charged with a felony after choking his five year old son multiple times and dragging him by the ear to his room.

The Alameda County District Attorney’s Office provided OpGov.news with information regarding the matter.The event occurred on March 8, 2026 when the small child was unable to finish his meal within the given 15-minute time frame placed for him. As punishment, the boy had been forced to jump rope but when he was unable to do that fast enough, the Deputy Sheriff choked his son by the mouth and neck before dragging the five year old’s whole body by ear to his room.
Steven Romero would be arrested in his hometown by the Livermore Police Department. An examination by medical personnel at a hospital identified bruising on the child's body that was found to be consistent with physical abuse. Despite the injuries sustained from Romero, the five-year old boy was treated at the hospital.
Romero had violated Penal Code 273d(a) outlining the willful and unlawful infliction of inhuman corporal injury and punishment resulting in traumatic condition. In addition to his arrest, Romero also had his Peace Officer Certification tagged as a “Temporary Suspension" following the incident as of September 2 2026.

Alongside the suspension, it is worth noting that multiple hearings have taken place since the incident. A closer look into who Steven Romero is displays a different type of person. Romero has been with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s office for roughly 10 years, as he started in 2016 according to his Linkedin profile.

Adding to his skills, his profile showcases a variety of experience with specialized skills ranging from security operations, insider threat detection, computer forensics and medical response to name a few. His biography also speaks to his mindset and poised demeanor in light of being a certified fitness instructor.

OpGov.News attempted to reach out to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office numerous times for comment regarding if Romero is still receiving compensation following the suspension of his Peace Officer Certification .The Sheriff's Office never responded.
