(LIVERMORE, Calif.) -- Lam Research recently opened its largest U.S. warehouse in Livermore, California.
The facility is a 470,000 square foot logistics and supply chain hub designed to improve Lam’s ability to “move critical parts, absorb shifts in demand, and support customers with greater speed and predictability,” according to the company's blog. The warehouse was strategically placed in order to conveniently centralize the company’s operations.
Lam research is a major global supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and services used to build microchips. The company already has a manufacturing office at 1 Portola Avenue, but the new warehouse at 710 Atlantis Street will serve as a hub for inventory retrievals that are reportedly 12 times faster than current systems. It will include a 40,000 square foot automated storage and retrieval system with 15 automated robots that bring the part retrieval time down to less than 30 seconds.
The facility’s ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on September 28th and was attended by both Mayor John Marchand of Livermore and California State Senator Jerry McNerney.
The latter presented Lam research with a certificate of recognition for their contribution to “advanced manufacturing infrastructure, local job growth, and supply chain resilience.” The warehouse is expected to support more than 200 jobs by 2027.
“I am proud that Lam Research continues to choose Livermore as a place to invest and grow, and we look forward to the opportunities this facility will bring to our community in the years ahead,” said Mayor Marchand in a statement to OpGov.News.
Marchand explained that for Livermore residents, the new facility brings in new employment opportunities and strengthens Livermore's local economy.
“Investments of this scale support local businesses, attract complimentary industries, and reinforce Livermore’s reputation as a desirable place for innovative companies to grow.”
He emphasized responsible economic development to continue to bring large-scale business projects to fruition.
This development aligns with the City of Livermore’s General Plan 2045, which was adopted in late July of this year. Under the General Plan’s Economic Development Element section, figure 3 outlines the city’s intention to foster economic growth through the expansion of “businesses focused on innovation, particularly in sectors such as energy, advanced manufacturing, and research and development.”
It includes plans to pursue partnerships that complement Livermore's national laboratories and innovation assets, invest in infrastructure that enables startups to scale locally, and to designate geographically defined innovation and employment districts.
“The opening of Lam Research’s new Atlantis logistics hub is an exciting milestone that reflects the company’s continued investment in Livermore and reinforces our city’s position as a center for innovation and advanced manufacturing,” said Mayor Marchand.
