(PLACER COUNTY, CA.) — There wasn’t a dry eye in the room this week as the Placer County Sheriff’s Office honored K9 Ruger with a final 10‑10 call, marking the beloved service dog’s retirement after nearly eight years protecting local communities.

Ruger, an apprehension and narcotics detection K9 partnered with Deputy Rigel, leaves behind an extraordinary legacy. During his career, he helped remove more than 32 pounds of fentanyl and 25 pounds of methamphetamine from county streets. He completed 11 physical apprehensions and contributed to “countless surrenders,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
But those who worked with him say the numbers tell only part of the story.
“Ruger’s impact goes far beyond statistics,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its announcement. “He helped protect lives, remove dangerous individuals from our streets, and stood beside his partner with loyalty and courage every single day.”
Deputy Rigel, Ruger’s partner since day one, also received recognition for his years of dedication. He now transitions to the department’s Air Operations Unit with Falcon 30. “He’s trading in the leash for a flight suit,” the agency wrote.
Community reaction on Instagram to Ruger’s retirement was instant and emotional, with almost 7,000 likes and hundreds of residents offering gratitude, humor, and heartfelt tears on social media.
“BEST BOY!! He’s retiring, not dying, and I’m over here crying!” one commenter wrote. Another added, “There’s not a dry eye in Placer County today — who started cutting onions??”
“Heroes sometimes have tails and display unconditional love,” a resident commented. “Enjoy your well‑earned rest, Ruger.”
Several echoed similar sentiments.
“I’m not crying — you’re crying!”
“Well done, Ruger!”
“Thank you for your service, officer.”
“That’s a certified extra good boy.”
Many thanked Deputy Rigel as well. “So happy for Ruger. Glen, you’re a good pup dad!” one user posted.

The Sheriff’s Office closed its tribute with a simple but powerful sendoff:
“K9 Ruger, you are clear for 10‑10.”
Ruger will now spend his retirement with his family — a life filled with toys, belly rubs, and the peace he earned through years of faithful service.
As another commenter put it: “Green grass and blue skies… enjoy retirement, good boy.”
