A transparent local government is the foundation of public trust.
That was the answer from Jersey City Ward A Council Candidate David Carment when asked to explain the importance of an open government.
"It removes barriers between decision-makers and residents," Carment told OpGov.ai.
The nonpartisan candidate challenges incumbent Denise Ridley, as well as candidates Pam Johnson, Tracy Sims, Lamont Wade, and Brandi Warren, all of whom do not claim a Republican or Democratic affiliation.
The pastor and community leader in the Greenville section of Jersey City believe "when policies, budgets, and processes are openly shared, "citizens feel informed and included rather than left in the dark."
"Transparency prevents corruption, builds accountability, and strengthens democracy by ensuring people see how decisions impact their daily lives—whether it's about housing, taxes, or neighborhood safety," Carment said.
Trust grows when government leaders demonstrate honesty, consistently share information, and welcome oversight, according to Carment.
"Transparency is not only an ethical standard; it's a practical commitment to fairness, respect, and genuine partnership with the public," Carment said.
Open government equals public participation.
Calling citizen input "the heart of democracy," Carment said public meetings allow residents to directly voice concerns and hold elected officials accountable in real time.
"Whether a person raises a major issue like affordable housing or a small concern like a pothole or playground safety, their voice matters," Carment said. "Public input ensures leaders remain grounded and attuned to community needs, not special interests."
The candidate added that meetings create shared problem-solving opportunities among neighbors and officials, noting "participation builds civic pride, fosters mutual respect, and strengthens the connection between government and people, ensuring policies are shaped from the bottom up, not top down.

"I believe leadership should reflect the values of the people, not the ambitions of politicians," Carment said.
Why Carment Believes He Can Do the Job
"I am running for office because I believe our community deserves leadership that listens, responds, and delivers results," he said, adding that too often, residents feel disconnected from decisions impacting their neighborhoods.
"I want to restore that connection by prioritizing transparency, accountability, and genuine engagement," he added.

The director of operations at Kismet of Kings and the director of HopeGroups at Hope Church Jersey City, believes public service has always been about more than titles—it's about lifting people, addressing everyday concerns, and creating opportunities for all.
"Running for office is my way to combine experience, passion, and commitment into action that reflects the needs and voices of the people I serve," he said. "This campaign is about building trust and delivering meaningful change."
What Separates Carment from other Candidates
"What separates me is not only my experience but my approach," Carment said. "While others may talk about solutions, I bring a record of listening, engaging, and actually solving problems."
The local also has leadership, which is rooted in accessibility.
"I return calls, answer questions, and show up," Carment said. "I've never viewed public office as a stepping stone but as a responsibility to serve."
His commitment is to be present, transparent, and accountable in a way that ensures government works for everyone, not just a few, according to the candidate.
"What makes me different is simple: I put people first, not politics, and deliver with compassion and consistency," Carment said.

Three Key Issues
"The three key issues I am running on are affordable housing, fiscal responsibility, and safer neighborhoods," Carment said with plans already in place.
"To tackle housing, I will push for policies protecting renters and expanding pathways for ownership," Carment said. "On fiscal responsibility, I'll fight for balanced budgets that prioritize services without overburdening taxpayers."
As for safer neighborhoods, the local leader said he will support community-based initiatives that reduce violence and improve the quality of life.
"To keep the public informed, I will issue regular progress reports, host monthly community meetings, share updates online, and invite feedback," Carment said. "Accountability means more than promises—it's about consistent communication and showing real results that reflect residents' everyday priorities."
Bottom line, the candidate said, "At its core, this campaign is about trust, service, and community."
"My promise is to lead with honesty, put residents first, and always invite dialogue," Carment said. "I want every person to know that their voice matters, whether they've lived here for generations or just recently joined our community."
