(ESCAMBIA) – Incumbent Paul Fetsko won the nonpartisan race for Escambia County School Board District 2 Tuesday, according to unofficial results from the Escambia County Supervisor of Elections. Fetsko defeated Gerald Washington 66% to 34%.
School Board members set district policy, approve the annual budget, hire and evaluate the superintendent, and vote on attendance zones and school construction, according to the Florida School Boards Association. Members serve four-year terms and are paid $47,519 annually under state statute.
District 2 includes Boys Base, Capstone Academy, Myrtle Grove Elementary, Navy Point Elementary, Pleasant Grove Elementary, Sherwood Elementary, West Pensacola Elementary, Warrington Elementary, Warrington Middle, and Escambia High School, according to the district.

Fetsko, a U.S. Navy veteran, worked 46 years in the Escambia County School District before his first term on the board, according to his biography. He started in 1974 as a teacher for deaf and hearing-impaired students and served as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction from 2000 to 2012.
“During my tenure as Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum & Instruction, academic achievement increased every year during that time frame,” Fetsko said in campaign materials.
Fetsko served six years on the Escambia County School District One-Half Cent Sales Tax Watchdog Committee, two as chairman, and served on the School Attendance Zone Advisory Committee, according to his biography.
Fetsko holds a Bachelor’s degree in Arts from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Secondary Education, English, and Deaf Education; an M.S. from Troy University in Administration & Supervision; and certification in Curriculum from the University of North Florida. He is a certified mediator for Exceptional Student Education via the Neighborhood Justice Center of Atlanta.
Fetsko and his wife of 42 years, Kathy, were both educators in the district. Their three sons attended District 2 schools and graduated from Escambia High School. The couple has lived in Myrtle Grove for 36 years, according to his bio.
“I have always approached educational issues by considering what is best for students within the fiscal constraints we operate,” Fetsko said in a statement. Board members take office in November.
