(SAN RAMON VALLEY, Calif.) — Academic success is often measured through grades and test scores, but learning involves much more. For Irum Zaidi, owner of Huntington Learning Center of San Ramon Valley, helping students succeed also means strengthening foundational skills, developing effective study habits, and building confidence in the classroom.
In an interview with OpGov.News, Zaidi discussed the role individualized academic support can play in a student's education. Students have different strengths, challenges, and learning needs, making it important to understand where a student may need additional help before determining how best to support them.

The center works with students in academic areas including reading, vocabulary, writing, and study skills. These foundational abilities can influence performance across multiple subjects and become increasingly important as students progress through school. A student who struggles with reading comprehension, for example, may encounter difficulties not only in English classes but also when interpreting instructions, understanding word problems, or studying material in other subjects. Similarly, stronger writing and vocabulary skills can help students communicate their ideas more clearly.
Study habits are another part of academic development. As coursework becomes more demanding, students are expected to manage assignments, prepare for tests, and work more independently. Developing those habits can help students approach their responsibilities in a more organized way.
The Huntington Learning Center of San Ramon Valley focuses on identifying individual areas of need and providing instruction designed around the student. Some students may need additional attention to foundational concepts, while others may be looking to strengthen existing abilities or prepare for more challenging coursework.
Confidence can also play an important role in the learning process. Students who repeatedly struggle with a subject may become hesitant to participate or attempt difficult work. Receiving additional instruction and having an opportunity to work through challenging concepts at an individualized pace can help students become more comfortable with the material.
For families, recognizing that a student needs additional academic support can be an important first step. Challenges in school do not necessarily look the same for every student. A student may perform well in one area while needing additional help in another. Zaidi's approach emphasizes looking at the individual student rather than applying the same solution to everyone.

The broader objective is to develop skills students can continue using beyond an individual homework assignment, test, or school year. Stronger reading, writing, and study skills can provide a foundation students carry with them as their academic responsibilities increase.
Through individualized instruction and academic support, Huntington Learning Center of San Ramon Valley works with local students to strengthen those foundations.
For Zaidi, the goal extends beyond completing today's schoolwork. It is about helping students develop the skills, habits, and confidence they need to become stronger and more independent learners.
