(MINNEAPOLIS, MN.) – Several honorary resolutions opened the regular meeting of the Minneapolis City Council on August 13, including LGBTQIA+ and Black Pride. The resolutions honor 25+ years of community empowerment and service provided to Minneapolis by groups Minnesota People of Color, LGBTQIA+ Pride, and Twin Cities Black Pride.
A Voluntary Relocation Policy for Heritage Park was unanimously approved. Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) is currently exploring community-based organization involvement with assistance from SRF Consulting Group.
The council acknowledged ‘years of neglect’ that led to unsafe living conditions, expressing a strong need for human-centered and individualized relocation methods. Approximately 211 residents have been affected by health/safety concerns and landlord bankruptcy.
Several affected residents were present at the council meeting, but didn’t have an opportunity to speak on the issue. The relocation policy allocates $2.5 million for relocation and repairs from the Affordable Housing Trust Fund.
Conversations became more heated over the nomination and vote for Dr. Nathan Chomilo to the Minnesota Ballpark Authority. Several council members felt there should have been an open application process. Despite these concerns, Chomilo was appointed to the committee by a 6-4 vote.
Multiple business licenses, contracts, and grants were approved without much discussion, and the Council received Mayor Jacob Frey’s 2027 budget for review.
