On Wednesday, November 11, the Veterans Memorial Building in downtown Danville will open its doors for a Veterans Day celebration that promises something for everyone — from military veterans and their families to schoolchildren curious about American history. And this year, there is an added reason to attend. As America celebrates its 250th anniversary, Danville will honor the men and women who have served our country while taking visitors on a remarkable journey through the nation's military past.

The event takes place at the Veterans Memorial Building, 400 Hartz Avenue, with a free public open house and museum exhibits from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is more than a ceremony. It's an opportunity for the community to come together, meet veterans, explore history, and introduce a younger generation to the meaning of service and sacrifice.
The day begins at 5 a.m., when members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 75 gather atop Mount Diablo to raise the American flag at the historic Beacon, a fitting tribute to those who have served our country. The celebration then moves to downtown Danville, where the Town Council will host a Veterans Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. on the second floor of the Veterans Wing at the Veterans Memorial Building. All veterans and their families are warmly invited to attend.

Beginning at 9 a.m., the building's main hall will feature historical displays commemorating the 250th anniversaries of the United States, the Army, Marine Corps, and Navy. Visitors will see artifacts from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Spanish-American War. Among the unusual exhibits will be locks of hair attributed to George Washington and Alexander Hamilton — a rare opportunity to encounter history in a way no textbook can match.
Outside, a Huey helicopter and military vehicles will offer visitors a closer look at equipment associated with military service. Families with children will find plenty to enjoy. Quest Science Center will offer hands-on activities, including its popular Wind Voyager. The combination of history, science, and military exhibits makes this an especially worthwhile outing for parents and grandparents.
At 11 a.m., the community will gather for the traditional Veterans Day Observance. Reenactors from the Sons of the American Revolution will present the American flag. Veterans attending Diablo Valley College will share their perspectives on military service and life after leaving the armed forces. The Monte Vista High School Choir will perform patriotic music throughout the ceremony, and Danville Mayor Newell Arnerich will share his personal experiences with veterans. It promises to be a meaningful hour, particularly for families who have never attended a Veterans Day ceremony.
Later in the afternoon, the celebration moves outdoors. At 4:40 p.m., residents are invited to gather at the flagpole near Hartz Avenue and East Prospect for a special Mount Diablo Beacon Lighting Ceremony. For longtime residents, the beacon is a familiar landmark. Its lighting on Veterans Day offers a fitting conclusion to a day devoted to remembrance.
But perhaps the most important reason to attend has little to do with helicopters, historical displays, or ceremonies. It is the chance to shake a veteran's hand, listen to a story, and say two simple words: Thank you.
Danville is fortunate to have a Veterans Memorial Building in the heart of town, a place where military history and community life come together. On November 11, its doors will be open, its exhibits ready, and its veterans waiting to welcome their neighbors.
Bring your children. Invite a friend. Stop by for an hour or spend the day. Admission to the public open house is free.
And if you know a veteran, consider bringing them along. It might be the most meaningful invitation you extend all year.
