Empowering communities through transparent governance
(ALBUQUERQUE) – New Mexico Voters will be at the polls this coming Tuesday, vying for their next Mayor and City Council Members to represent them starting this coming January.
In November, New Mexico Voters went to the polls to decide whether to keep incumbent Mayor Tom Keller or elect newcomer Darren White as Mayor.
OpGov.ai has been following election results as well has written a previous story with election results last November.
Keller received 46,991 votes, 36% of the vote, and White received 40,783 votes, 31%, triggering a runoff election for the mayor's seat and the runners-up for City Council Seats 1 and 3, which either candidate needs to reach 50% plus one to break the tie.
Teressa Garcia is in the race for City Council Seat for District 3, running against incumbent Klarissa Peña, who is originally from El Paso and a high school graduate of Eastwood High School.
When OpGov.ai asked Garcia would return back to Texas she said no, but El Paso is where my heart is and will always be home.
Garcia is rooted to serve her community and understands how is important to stand in the gap for the Latino community. Garcia has a heart to serve in any capacity she is able to.
As the next city council representative in her district, one of the three items that will be her primary focus is that of basic infrastructure.
“Lack of basic infrastructure is unacceptable," Garcia said.
The second item of priority is that of Economic Development and Employment and coming in third on her list is to push for Affordable Housing.
It is worth noting that Garcia not only accomplished the goal of running for office in the state of New Mexico but was also recognized as a Junior Collegiate Scholar for her talent in soccer in 2009.
Several calls and emails were made to the office of the current City Councilwoman Klarissa Peña.

OpGov.ai attempted to reach her directly via email and numbers found on the city webpage, as well as Cherise Quezada Policy Analyst for District 3, and did not get a response from Peña’s office before the deadline either.
Peña has accomplished numerous projects while in office some of which include:
- Hispanic Heritage Day
- APD at Risk Youth Programs and Outreach
- Bike Recycling Project

OpGov.ai has learned that the current Mayor Tom Keller is also pushing for Affordable Housing, among other things, on Keller’s agenda as mayor of Albuquerque.
While preparing this report, OpGov.ai has also learned that the Mayor has been involved in a project to assist the homeless in New Mexico.
According to Ballot Pedia challenger Darren White, former Sherriff of Barnalillo County.
OpGov.ai has reached out to Keller’s office via phone and by request via email but has not been able to schedule an interview or get a written response from Keller himself in time before story deadline.
