Empowering communities through transparent governance
(FREMONT, CA) – Gopal Krishan has officially announced his candidacy for Alameda County District Attorney in the 2026 election, sharing his vision during an exclusive conversation with Open Governance. His campaign, he explained, is built on accountability, transparency, and the use of technology to track public outcomes.
Krishan emphasized to OpGov.ai that he is not a career politician, which he believes sets him apart. “I live here, I work here, and I know the issues people face,” he said. According to him, the current system is failing, and the DA’s office should serve the public rather than the bureaucracy. This belief drives his commitment to change.
To begin with, Krishan plans to take a tougher stance on crime. He criticized existing policies as “soft on crime,” pointing to plea deals and reduced charges as factors that undermine public safety. “If you’re arrested and charged, there must be consequences,” he asserted, promising stricter enforcement and deterrents such as minimum bail amounts for repeat offenders.
Moving forward, Krishan intends to create community-based policies that reflect the diversity of Alameda County. He explained that each neighborhood faces unique challenges, from hate crimes to property theft, and his approach will involve working closely with community leaders to address these issues. “Each community faces different challenges. My policies will reflect that,” he said.
Equally important, Krishan is committed to transparency. He told OpGov.ai that he plans to make crime data and DA office policies easily accessible online, using AI tools to track outcomes and measure success. “This is Silicon Valley. If we don’t use technology here, where else?” he remarked.
In addition to these priorities, Krishan addressed concerns from small business owners, pledging to ensure restitution for victims and fair prosecution of offenders. He also promised zero tolerance for corruption within the DA’s office and stronger enforcement against hate crimes. “If it comes to my desk, it will be investigated. Hate crimes are morally and legally unacceptable,” he affirmed.
Looking ahead, Krishan outlined his immediate goals if elected. Within two years, he plans to publish policies online, create social media outreach to engage younger residents, and introduce tools for anonymous reporting of hate crimes. “Accountability improves when people are watching,” he said. “I’ll make sure the public knows what we’re doing.”
As the 2026 election approaches, Krishan’s message remains clear: the DA’s office is a public post, and it should answer to the people.
