(LIVERMORE, Calif.) — September 23, 2026 — Golden mussels have been detected in Lake Del Valle, prompting new restrictions for boaters at the popular Livermore recreation area, the East Bay Regional Park District announced Monday.
A watercraft launched at Del Valle must undergo a 30-day quarantine before it may be permitted at another Park District waterbody. There is an exception for boats used exclusively at Del Valle that return with an intact Del Valle boat band. Boaters planning to visit waters managed by other agencies should check those agencies’ rules, which may differ.
Golden mussels can attach to boats, ropes, and other submerged equipment, allowing them to spread between lakes. The invasive species was first detected in North America in October 2024, at the Port of Stockton in the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. Within the Park District, golden mussels had previously been detected at Contra Loma in Antioch, where the same quarantine rule applies.

Inspection fees are $10 for motorized vessels and $5 for car-top watercraft and inflatables, according to the district.
Watercraft requiring inspection include boats, kayaks, canoes, sailboats, inflatable craft, and any type of floating board. Inspections are required at the following locations:
The district urges visitors to clean, drain, and dry their equipment after every outing. That means removing plants and debris, draining water from compartments such as bilges and live wells, and allowing gear to dry completely before entering another waterbody.
