(TOMS RIVER, N.J.) --- A nearly $200 million reconstruction project on the Garden State Parkway is expected to begin in spring 2027.
The proposed operational improvement will cost approximately $193 million and is designed to improve safety in a high-crash-rate, high-traffic-volume area. The improvements will span about 3 miles between Exits 80 and 83.
The improvements will include a new southbound entrance and northbound exit ramps at Exit 80, a relocation of the Exit 81 southbound exit ramp and an addition of collector-distributor roads to improve access to Exits 80, 81 and 82.
Four ramps connecting the Parkway to Route 37 at Exits 82B and 82C will be reshaped to have curves that bend less sharply.

Two goals of the project are to eliminate the weaving conditions and provide 12-foot shoulders and travel lanes. 11 bridges within the project area will also be replaced during this reconstruction period.
The Media Relations and Public Information Officer for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Tom Feeney, told OpGov.News that a public hearing on this project will be held next month, giving people a chance to “hear the plans and provide feedback on them.”
Feeney stated that the construction is expected to take four years and is unsure if any businesses along the new ramps will be affected.
There were 63 crashes reported at or near the interchanges last year, including one fatal crash.
On August 7, 2026, near mile marker 80, a fatal multi-crash occurred with one person killed and eight injured. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while three others were listed in critical condition at the time.
