Inmate treatment at the Fulton County jail is under scrutiny.
Negligence of inmates housed in the Fulton County jail has been documented recently. A 20-year-old woman named Tyriana Ledbetter was attacked by her cellmate in the Fulton County jail.
OpGov.ai reported on issues within jails, specifically at the Atlanta City Detention Center (ACDC). The center was created as a solution to overcrowding in other jails in Fulton County.
OpGov.ai highlighted the inhumane conditions inmates experience and how the city isn’t finding alternative solutions to incarceration.
Fulton County Sheriff Patrick Labat dismissed the idea that his police department isn’t protecting inmates.
“We are doing our best and fight for humane conditions in the Fulton County jail,” Labat said. “What you hear from the news are allegations that aren’t always true.”
Ledbetter’s situation shows the issue within jails is getting worse.
Senior Movement Policy Council Member Devin Franklin has voiced his discontent with jails in Fulton County and the ACDC.
Devin Franklin speaks at a regular city council meeting.
“We know that in November 2024, the United States Department of Justice published a scathing report after a 16-month investigation in the Fulton County jail,” Franklin said during a regular city meeting on Oct.6. “The jail failed to protect people incarcerated against violence,” Franklin said.
Labat also described how Ledbetter’s tragic incident isn’t the first to happen in jails.
“Violence in jails has been happening for the last 30 years,” Labat said. “When individuals enter jails, they become violent and start weaponizing the building.”
More assistance from the Board of Commissioners is needed to help keep inmates safe, according to Labat.
“The Fulton County jail takes situations like what happened to Ledbetter seriously and works all year to find solutions to protect people,” Labat said.
