(FREMONT, CA) — Fremont Mayor Raj Salwan is inviting student residents to sit down over coffee and share their ideas, concerns, and suggestions for the city through a new initiative called “Matcha With the Mayor.” The program offers students the opportunity to sign up for a 20-minute conversation with Salwan at a local coffee shop.
According to a post announcing the program, students can use the meetings to discuss an idea for improving Fremont, pitch a project they would like to see undertaken, raise a concern, or simply talk about issues affecting the community.

OpGov.News launched a poll on Nextdoor to see what Fremont students wanted to discuss the most. With options ranging from “Housing & affordability” to “Education” and “Transportation,” the results show that most students wanted to talk about something else. With nine votes, “Other” was the most chosen response, and one commenter, named Gary B., said that if he spoke to the mayor, he’d want to discuss deportation and assistance to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement).
Taking second place in the poll was affordability and housing, with eight votes. Remaining votes were spread fairly evenly at four, except public safety, which came in last, with three.

The meetings will be scheduled on a rolling basis, meaning requests will be considered as they are received. Residents interested in participating can sign up through the program’s online registration link, tinyurl.com/matchawithmayor. According to the flyer, those with questions should email voicesoffremont@gmail.com.
In all, “Matcha with the Mayor” is designed to provide residents, including students, with an informal setting to communicate directly with the city’s mayor, bringing the ideas and concerns of the younger generations to the forefront of local politics.
For his part, Salwan said he is looking forward to hearing from residents and “getting good ideas moving.”
