The investigation unfolded when Marin County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a report of shots fired inside a home. Deputies arrived on the scene and made contact with the caller, one of the other Mannix children, who had safely escaped the home alive according to Marin County Police Department.

Ann Mannix was a retired San Francisco Police Department deputy chief, becoming the highest-ranking woman in the SFPD on her promotion to the role. She is being remembered for her longtime service to the SFPD, as well as for being a mother who cared deeply for her children. Katherine "Katie" Mannix was an aspiring nurse, in her second year of nursing school at College of Marin.
Reports from the California Post say Ann Mannix was in a 'great place, looking forward to a fresh start' following her decision to divorce her 'possessive' husband just two weeks before the shooting occurred.

Brendan Mannix, the nephew of San Francisco’s former deputy police chief, paid tribute to his aunt and 24-year-old cousin in a Facebook post that has since been removed. In it, he said that the killings left their family “forever changed.”
“My sweet Katie had her whole life ahead of her. She was so close to following in her older sister Lauren’s footsteps and becoming a nurse. Katie was the kind of person who would send you a random text just to say she loved you or to give you encouragement when you needed it. She had such a big heart and a way of making people feel special,” said Brendan Mannix in the removed Facebook post.
Brendan Mannix, who also served in the SFPD, spoke on his aunt’s achievements, calling her a ‘pioneer’ in the organization. "She worked her way up to Deputy Chief, but she never forgot where she started. She looked out for the women coming up behind her and helped open doors for them. I’m so proud of what she accomplished and the example she set.”

Retired captain Alexa O’Brien, a former colleague of Ann and Kevin Mannix, spoke to the California Post. ”He was very, I don't know how to say it, but vanilla," O'Brien said. "They were an interesting couple. She had to be like six inches taller than him, and he was little. If anybody was to look at a tough person, you'd look at Ann as the tough one. That's just how I viewed them.”
O'Brien said Kevin Mannix's reserved personality stood in stark contrast to that of Ann's, who rose through the ranks of the San Francisco Police Department to become deputy chief.
"He's not a Type A personality kind of guy," O'Brien said. "When he would talk to us police officers, or if I took a class and he spoke in the class, there wasn't anything that would strike me or give me any indication he would ever do this.”
Brendan Mannix also highlighted that his heart is especially with his two surviving cousins at this time.
“I know I’ll carry this loss for the rest of my life. Aunt Ann and Katie, I love you both and miss you more than I can say. I find comfort knowing our Lord and Savior is holding you in His arms, free from pain and suffering,” he said.
