(ESCAMBIA COUNTY, FL.) --- Escambia County has a long relationship with school district superintendents, as shown by tonight’s decision to elect the next one rather than appoint an educational leader.
The 2026 Primary Election brought out 53,655 voters, with up to 38,244 voting to elect the next superintendent. Before 2018, voters elected a superintendent; since then, the county has appointed one. Nearly a decade later, things are going back to the way they were, with 71.28% deciding tonight to do so.
Less than half, 28.72%, voted to keep an appointed official rather than an elected one.

Escambia County Elections Supervisor Robert Bender told OpGov.News how the Primary Elections is a game changer, specifically noting the importance of the county referendum question seen on the August 18 ballot.
This reporter should know. When I worked for WEAR in 2022, Dr. Tim Smith was under constant scrutiny, which I reported on here.
Ultimately, Smith was removed, and here we are four years later, with citizens once again asked to decide whether the regional school leader should be voted in or selected.
That election will take place in November 2028.
